If you are any kind of technology professional, you probably know that Windows 7 Release Candidate hit the download wire today. I myself am waiting for mine to finish and will have some tasty Windows 7 articles up soon. In the meantime, take a gander at what has been flying around the blogosphere today about the new Windows OS.
Why not start this out with a FAIL post. Supposedly, Windows Explorer still allows a simple and pretty obvious user exploit. A virus can camoflage itself as a text file (or any other type of file), thus tricking a user into running the executable. This is why I always disable “Hide file extenstions of known file types”.
Another FAIL, but of the “haha, in your face from the developers” type. Gizmodo posts that Windows 7 RC will shutdown every 2 hours once the temporary license expires on June 1, 2010. Why not just disable the OS so its only possible to recover files? The first comment to this post is classic, by the way.
Enough with the FAIL articles. Lets move on the features. Lifehacker writes about the differences between the Beta and the Release Candidate, with screenshots! I am itching to try out the new XP mode feature and I love the new wallpapers.
Speaking of XP Mode…Tech-Recipes explains how to install this nifty little feature. It doesn’t look like that bad of a configuration but I worry about the performance hit on the system. I will write more on this once I get it installed myself.
It appears that XP mode doesn’t do a good job of distinguishing itself from the host Windows 7 OS. This may confuse and annoy potential users. This feature was made available to entice people to upgrade but this is the type of thing that could make people downgrade again.
It seems there is more bad than good today but people tend to be more vocal when things don’t work the way they like. I suppose this is the point to Beta and RC. Hopefully, the user community input will make W7 a quality product.
