Windows 7 – XP Mode – Installing

Now that you have prepared your PC for XP mode, it is time to install it.  There are two pieces of software you will need to download first:

Windows Virtual PC Beta - This is the virtualization software that is going to contain the Windows XP virtual machine that powers XP Mode.
Windows XP Mode Beta – This is the Windows XP virtual machine that powers XP Mode.

Installing Windows Virtual PC Beta:

Double clicking on the installer asks you if you want to install KB958559.  Click Yes.

Click restart now to restart your PC.

Now that the Virtual PC Beta is installed, we need to install the Windows XP Mode Beta:

Installation only takes a few minutes.  It is basically just extracting the virtual machine to your PC.

Click Finish to launch Virtual Windows XP or launch it from the Start menu.

Now that both pieces of required software are installed, all we have to do is configure it.  After launching the Virtual Windows XP machine, you will see:

Enter a password for the "user" virtual machine user profile.  Make sure that "Remember Credentials" is checked.

Make sure you let Automaic Updates keep the virtual machine up to date.

Once it is done, a virtual Windows XP desktop will be presented to you.
