Tech Tip #9: Change the Color Scheme in Word/Outlook 2007

This is a neat little asthetic change that I had no idea could be done until my friend Jason told me about it one day.  I prefer a darker color scheme on my desktop and one day I noticed that his Outlook had a nice black color scheme going on.  I asked him how he did this and he told me, change the setting in Word.  Yes…a setting in Word will change the color scheme in Outlook.  Here is how:

In Word, click on the Office button and then click Word Options.

In Word, click on the Office button and then click Word Options.

In the Word Options window, select the Popular tab. You will have a selection for Color Scheme, which you can change from blue to silver or black. Click OK.

As you can see, your Word color scheme has a nice black look (or silver). This is great for those who like a darker and easier on the eyes desktop.

Once you open Outlook, you will notice the same color scheme was applied here. This will be true for all of your other Office apps as well.

  1. Wow – i had no idea you could do that… leave it to MS to have a setting for outlook in Word!

  2. The same setting is in Excel and PowerPoint. I guess it is just a universal Office 2007 setting that can be altered from any one of the individual apps.
